The use of virtual reality to visualize 3D datasets is one of the most fascinating VR trends. Powerful software algorithms by arivis AG along with the high resolving power of ZEISS microscope systems now enable microscopists to really immerse into their dataset. Navigating by simply moving the head, all hidden parts of the sample can be observed, discussed or even measured and analyzed. Introduced at Neuroscience 2015 in Chicago and demonstrated at the ZEISS booth on various tradeshows afterwards, the audiences were stunned by the possibilities that VR combined with ZEISS microscope systems offers for their 3D datasets in materials research, life science and industry.

At Control 2016 in Stuttgart, arivis and ZEISS showcased immersive microscopy for materials samples. As an example a complex component, manufactured by 3D printing using laser sinter technology, was imaged using ZEISS Xradia high-resolution X-ray microscopy. The virtual reality visualization obtained by the powerful arivis algorithms is displayed on Oculus Rift VR glasses. Combining these pioneering technologies, users can virtually fly through the sample and inspect the dimensional accuracy as well as microstructural composition.

Introduced at Neuroscience 2015 in Chicago, the VR representation of large digital dataset acquired by light and electron microscopes immediately caught the interest of scientists. The ability to interactively navigate complex structures of the brain sparked thoughts about future applications, for example in deciphering the connectome with the help of immersive VR microscopy.

Christian Götze, Head of Development at arivis AG, explains a new approach to look at the large data acquired with microscopes. ZEISS and arivis partnered to create a prototype which allows you to render and visualize terabytes of volume data with the Oculus Rift virtual reality headset. You get a deeper insight into very complex brain structures and intuitively understand your data. You can virtually step into your sample, fly through a brain, past brain cells and analyze the image from every angle, and from inside.
