QIAscout enables easy sample isolation in single-cell analysis with inverted ZEISS microscopes

Image courtesy of QIAGEN.QIAscout from QIAGEN is a novel instrument for isolation of viable single cells from samples to enable cost-efficient, accurate single-cell analysis with next-generation sequencing (NGS) or polymerase chain reaction (PCR). The QIAscout instrument, the size of a hand-held mobile device, adds to QIAGEN’s Sample to Insight portfolio of solutions for single-cell analysis in research fields such as oncology, immunology, neurobiology and stem cell biology.

QIAscout’s proprietary array technology includes a high-density microwell array that can be used to isolate and recover individual cells from a cell suspension. The device serves as an add-on to an inverted microscope, punching out a so-called microraft to hold the single cell of interest selected by a scientist. While QIAscout is compatible with any major brand of inverted microscope, QIAGEN has entered an exclusive commercialization partnership with ZEISS to market the QIAscout as an add-on.

Peter Kraemer, Director Education & Routine at ZEISS Microscopy states that “QIAscout is a perfect example how customers can benefit from close interaction between leading technology providers – the seamless integration of QIAscout and Axio Vert.A1 provides a simple and unique solution for the isolation of single cells.” With this partnership, ZEISS as a leader in microscopy and QIAGEN as a leader in downstream reagent kits for the first time combine their knowledge in optical instruments and molecular diagnostics. ZEISS already recommends QIAGEN kits such as RNeasy for its industry-leading Laser Catapulting Microdissection (LCM) portfolio. While LCM systems such as the ZEISS PALM MicroBeam or PALM CombiSystem are ideal instruments for the isolation of adherent cells and cellular compartments from tissue, QIAscout is an affordable solution for single cell isolation in suspension that is perfectly designed to fit inverted microscopes by ZEISS.

“QIAscout is a unique addition to QIAGEN’s portfolio of sample technologies that provides an easy, fast and cost-effective method to isolate single cells from any sample”, said Brad Crutchfield, Senior Vice President of QIAGEN’s Life Sciences Business Area. ”Other solutions are highly complex, expensive, and accessible only to large laboratories. In addition, they may stress the cells creating additional experimental variables. QIAscout, on the other hand, is powered by a novel approach to single cell isolation and enables all scientists to accurately select single cells within minutes through visual control using a standard microscope, and with ZEISS we found a partner that has over 150 years of experience in microscopy.”

QIAscout is available for inverted ZEISS microscopes such as Primovert, Axio Vert.A1 and Axio Observer with a multitude of fully tested and compatible ZEISS objectives. Further details are available at www.qiagen.com/qiascout.
