ZEISS MultiSEM equally benefits the field of brain research and the semiconductor industry
ZEISS MultiSEM is among the Top 5 projects of the Deutscher Zukunftspreis 2017. The prize for technology and innovation is awarded by the German president and honors excellent scientific innovations that also have economic potential and create jobs. While in a conventional scanning electron microscope only a single electron beam captures the sample, ZEISS MultiSEM uses up to 91 parallel rays – the only microscope in the world to do so. This results in an extremely high capture speed and reduces the data acquisition time for biological samples from several years to a matter of months. As a result, ZEISS MultiSEM is the world’s fastest electron microscope.
Groundbreaking areas of application
The microscope captures images of samples several centimeters in size at nanometer resolution. Typical areas of application include the field of brain research and the semiconductor industry. Brain researchers use the microscope to capture the structure and function of the brain. Their results may help to better understand the causes of neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s and then develop suitable therapies. In the semiconductor industry, ZEISS MultiSEM assists in defect analysis and making advancements to computer chips, thus making it possible to develop new, higher-quality electronic components.
“We are extremely pleased to be among the top-five projects of the Deutscher Zukunftspreis 2017. An interdisciplinary team of now over 40 employees has been working for more than 14 years on advancing this pioneering technology and opening up new fields of application,” says Gregor Dellemann, Vice President Business Development MultiSEM. Renowned scientists from Harvard University and the Max Planck Society were previously involved in the development process and today are also customers. Seven groups of leading researchers in Germany, the United States, and Japan are already using ZEISS MultiSEM for their research. Together with these pilot customers, ZEISS is currently exploring the new technology’s possibilities within the scope of a partner program.
The Deutscher Zukunftspreis
The Deutscher Zukunftspreis, awarded by the German president for technology and innovation, was initiated about 20 years ago. The award stands for ideas that lead to success, repeatedly points out societal problems, and identifies potential solutions.
In the past, two other products from ZEISS have been nominated for the renowned award.
